can i move photos and video sraight through the computer to my external hard drive ???

I am having tons of trouble downloading photos and videos off the ipad..it wont show up in computer.....can I copy straight from i pad to external hard drive..i do not want to put them on computer first..i move them through the computer only..I do this with every other device ..how can i do it for my i pad???
